Team Assessment

First Steps' team development processes all begin with first understanding that team's current reality. While team development is often enjoyable (and always meaningful, if not strictly fun) work for the team, it must be targeted.

Depending upon the status of the team and the nature of its performance challenges, our team assessment process can include any or all of the following five steps:

  1. Comparing the team to the standards of team excellence, identify the Team's Strengths and Challenges.
    1. method: Survey all members of the team via questionnairre. Click here for survey sample (also available online).

  2. Flesh Out the Strengths and Challenges That Have Been Identified in order to acquire a deeper understanding of what the issues mean to the team members.
    1. method: Interview team members by phone using the survey analysis results as a starting point.

  3. Identify Problematic Dynamics and Other Challenges That May Be Out of the Team Members' Awareness, such as issues of trust, power, influence, communication, involvement, as well as any particular team skill d.eficiencies
    1. method: Observe a Team in process.

  4. Provide Assessment Results and Feedback to Team. Determine the Level of Ownership for the Challenges.
    1. method: Meet with the Team. Provide a Summary of the Data. Gather Corrective/Supplemental Data.

  5. Provide feedback to the Point of Contact. Establish Next Steps. Establish Goals for Facilitation/Training, as Appropriate.
